About The City

Gateway to God, Gateway to the Himalayas

Where the Ganga leaves the mountains and meets the plains — one of Hinduism's seven holiest cities and the starting point of every Char Dham journey.

Har Ki Pauri & Ganga Aarti
Every evening, thousands gather along the ghat as diyas float down the Ganga and priests perform the aarti in unison. It's one of those experiences that photos never quite capture — you have to stand there to feel it.
One of the Sapta Puri
Haridwar is counted among the seven holiest cities in Hindu tradition and has hosted the Kumbh Mela for centuries, drawing pilgrims from across the country and beyond every twelve years.
Gateway to Char Dham
Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri — nearly every pilgrim's road journey to these four shrines begins right here in Haridwar, making it the practical starting point for your entire yatra.
Getting Here

How to Reach Haridwar

Well connected by rail, road, and air — making Haridwar the natural starting point for your yatra.

By Air
Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest, roughly 35–40 km from Haridwar. It has regular daily flights from Delhi, with limited seasonal connectivity to a few other cities. A taxi from the airport takes about an hour.
By Train
Haridwar Junction is exceptionally well connected, with direct trains from Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Mumbai, and most major Indian cities — making it the most common rail entry point for the entire Char Dham Yatra.
By Road
Haridwar sits on NH 334, roughly 220 km from Delhi — a comfortable 5 to 6 hour drive. Regular buses and private taxis also connect Haridwar to Chandigarh and other nearby cities.

Places to Visit in Haridwar

Worth a day of your itinerary before the mountain journey begins.

Must-See
Har Ki Pauri
The holiest ghat in Haridwar, where the evening Ganga Aarti draws large crowds every single day. Time your visit close to sunset — the sound of temple bells and the sight of floating diyas make it worth the wait.
Temple
Chandi Devi Temple
Perched on Neel Parvat hill, this shrine is reachable by cable car or a scenic trek. The climb rewards you with sweeping views across Haridwar and the winding Ganga below.
Temple
Mansa Devi Temple
One of the Siddh Peeth shrines, sitting atop Bilwa Parvat and easily reached by ropeway from the city center. A popular stop for both devotion and the panoramic city views from the summit.
Shakti Peeth
Maya Devi Temple
One of the oldest temples in Haridwar, considered a Siddh Peeth and dedicated to Goddess Maya Devi. Quieter than the hilltop shrines, but no less significant to local devotees.
Nature
Rajaji National Park
A short drive from the city, home to elephants, tigers, and a wide range of Himalayan foothill wildlife. A good half-day trip if you want a break from temple-hopping.
Ashram
Sapt Rishi Ashram
A tranquil spot on the Ganga's bank where the river is believed to have split into seven streams to avoid disturbing meditating sages — one of Haridwar's more peaceful, less crowded corners.

FAQs

Common Questions

Haridwar is exceptionally well connected. By train, Haridwar Junction has direct services from Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, and most major cities. By road, it's roughly 220 km from Delhi via NH 334, about 5–6 hours. By air, the nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun, around 35–40 km away, with a taxi covering that stretch in about an hour.
Top spots include Har Ki Pauri (for the famous evening Ganga Aarti), Chandi Devi and Mansa Devi temples on their respective hilltops, Maya Devi Temple, Rajaji National Park for wildlife, and the quieter Sapt Rishi Ashram. Most of these can comfortably be covered in a single day if you plan your route well.
The traditional route runs: Haridwar → Barkot → Yamunotri → Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Guptkashi → Sonprayag → Kedarnath → Joshimath → Badrinath → Rishikesh → Haridwar. This west-to-east sequence covers roughly 1,500–1,600 km round trip and is typically completed over 10 to 12 days, including rest days and darshan time at each shrine.
We offer a full Char Dham package (10–12 days covering all four shrines), a Do Dham package focused on Kedarnath and Badrinath (5–7 days), a Kedarnath-only package (3–5 days), and fully custom itineraries built around your available time and group size.
Yes, and it's by far the most popular way to complete the circuit. A private car gives you flexibility that buses and shared transport simply can't — your own pace, your own stops, and no sharing space with strangers on narrow mountain roads. Just keep in mind that night driving is generally restricted on hill roads, typically between 8 PM and 4 AM.
Kedarnath, via Sonprayag (the last motorable point), is approximately 230–247 km from Haridwar, taking 7 to 9 hours by road. From Sonprayag, an additional 16 km trek, pony ride, or helicopter transfer completes the journey to the temple itself.
