Hemkund Sahib Yatra Guide

Planning a pilgrimage to the world's highest gurudwara and wondering about the Hemkund Sahib distance from your city? You are not alone. Every season, thousands of pilgrims from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and the rest of India search for the exact road and trek distance before they book a cab, a bus seat or a helicopter ticket. The honest answer has two parts: a long mountain drive to Govindghat, followed by a walk of roughly 19 km one way, because no motorable road reaches the gurudwara itself.

This guide from Chardham taxi services, the dedicated Char Dham and pilgrimage arm of DivyaShree Cabs, explains the Hemkund Sahib distance stage by stage. You will find the trek distance, the road distance from Rishikesh, Haridwar, Delhi, Ludhiana, Badrinath and Kedarnath, a full map-style route, travel options by road, bus, car, train and helicopter, and honest answers about difficulty, steps, overnight stay and the best month to go.

Hemkund Sahib Distance Explained: Road Journey Plus Trek

Hemkund Sahib sits in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand beside a glacial lake, ringed by seven snow-capped peaks. Published altitude figures differ, from about 4,160 m to 4,329 m, and some sources quote more than 15,000 ft, so treat roughly 4,300 m as a safe working number. The gurudwara is dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh Ji and is widely described as the highest gurudwara in the world. No road reaches it. Vehicles stop at Govindghat on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway (NH 7), and everything after that is on foot, by pony or palki, with an optional helicopter hop for the first stretch.

So when pilgrims ask how many kilometres Hemkund Sahib is, they are really asking two questions. The first is how far their starting city is from Govindghat by road. The second is the Hemkund Sahib trek distance from Govindghat, which is about 19 km one way. A simple rule of thumb: the full Hemkund Sahib distance equals the road distance to Govindghat plus 19 km of walking.

A quick word on accuracy. Websites report slightly different numbers because they measure from different points, such as Govindghat town, the Pulna roadhead or Ghangaria. The Uttarakhand pilgrimage portal lists 13 km plus 6 km, while other guides say 19 to 21 km in total. We use rounded ranges and mark them approximate, which is more honest than quoting one number as certain.

Hemkund Sahib Distance on Foot: Hemkund Sahib Trek Distance from Govindghat

The Hemkund Sahib trek distance is split into two very different halves. The first is a long, steady walk along the Lakshman Ganga valley. The second is a short but steep climb on a stone-paved path. Understanding both halves helps you decide whether to walk, hire a pony, or fly the first stretch.

Govindghat to Ghangaria: about 13 km

The trek begins at Govindghat after crossing the Alaknanda river on a hanging bridge. Many guides describe a short motorable stretch to Pulna, roughly 3–4 km, with the remaining 9–10 km on foot, but local arrangements change, so confirm at Govindghat. The path is wide and well maintained, passes forest, waterfalls and tea stalls, and climbs gradually. Most pilgrims need roughly 5–7 hours with rest stops.

Ghangaria, also called Govind Dham, sits at about 3,050–3,100 m. It has a gurudwara, simple hotels and lodges, and it is the base for both Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers. This is why the distance from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib is almost always broken into a night halt here.

Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib: about 6 km

This is the tough half. The path gains roughly 1,100 m in 6 km, with paved stone sections and a long staircase at the end. Fit walkers take about 3–5 hours to go up; the descent is faster but hard on the knees. Ponies and palkis are available on this stretch. Some travel sites say 5 km, which is a different measuring point, not a different trail.

Return walk and time limits

There is no overnight stay at Hemkund Sahib, so pilgrims start up early in the morning and leave the shrine by about 2 pm to be back at Ghangaria before dark. The next day the walk down to Govindghat takes around 3–4 hours. In total, the Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib distance covered over the round trip is close to 38 km on foot, spread across three days.

Hemkund Sahib Distance by Road from Major Cities

Because the trek always starts at Govindghat, the Hemkund Sahib distance from any city is simply that city's road distance to Govindghat plus the 19 km walk. Here is what the figures look like from the cities pilgrims ask about most.

Rishikesh to Hemkund Sahib distance

The Rishikesh to Hemkund Sahib distance is about 266–280 km by road to Govindghat, then 19 km on foot. Guides differ because some measure from the Rishikesh bus stand and others from the Laxman Jhula side. The drive usually takes 8–10 hours. Rishikesh is also the nearest major railhead, so most train travellers start here. If you are counting the Rishikesh to Hemkund Sahib uttarakhand distance for a budget, count roughly 285–300 km one way including the trek. For a vehicle journey, the Rishikesh to Hemkund Sahib, Uttarakhand distance by road ends at Govindghat, about 270 km away. If you also plan to visit Kedarnath, see our guide to the Rishikesh to Kedarnath distance.

Haridwar to Hemkund Sahib distance

Haridwar adds roughly 24 km to the Rishikesh figure, which puts Govindghat at about 295–300 km. Our dedicated page on the Haridwar to Hemkund Sahib distance covers this route in more depth, and pilgrims arriving by train can also read about taxi service in Haridwar for Chardham Yatra.

Delhi to Hemkund Sahib distance

The Delhi to Hemkund Sahib distance is roughly 500–525 km by road to Govindghat, plus the 19 km trek. Mapping sites show slightly different totals, and some show an optimistic 9–10 hours, but with hill traffic and breaks, plan on 12–14 hours. For many pilgrims the Delhi to Hemkund Sahib uttarakhand distance is easiest in two parts: first the plains stretch, covered in our guide to the Delhi to Haridwar distance (about 200–206 km), then roughly 295–300 km of mountain road. Many families break the journey at Rishikesh, Srinagar (Garhwal) or Joshimath.

Ludhiana to Hemkund Sahib distance

The Ludhiana to Hemkund Sahib distance is about 560–580 km by road to Govindghat, usually a 13–14 hour drive, plus 19 km on foot. The common road route runs through Haryana and Uttarakhand via Haridwar and Rishikesh onto NH 7. Some websites quote much lower figures, but they do not match any real road route to Govindghat, so ignore them. Pilgrims from Punjab often start at night and reach Rishikesh or Srinagar by morning. If you are bringing a vehicle registered outside Uttarakhand, read about the Green Card for Uttarakhand before you leave.

Badrinath to Hemkund Sahib distance

The Badrinath to Hemkund Sahib distance is the shortest in this list. Badrinath is only about 22–25 km from Govindghat, a drive of roughly an hour, followed by the usual 19 km trek. This makes Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib a natural pair on one trip. Many pilgrims visit Badrinath first, then return down the valley to Govindghat the next morning. Read our guide on the Haridwar to Badrinath distance to plan the full route.

Kedarnath to Hemkund Sahib distance

The Kedarnath to Hemkund Sahib distance is about 250–260 km by road between the Kedarnath valley (Gaurikund and Sonprayag side) and Govindghat, plus the 19 km trek. Published figures vary, and the drive usually takes 9–10 hours via Guptkashi, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Joshimath. The Kedarnath temple itself is reached by a separate trek from Gaurikund. If you are combining both shrines, the guide on the Kedarnath to Badrinath distance and the page about the Kedarnath temple will help. For the Kedarnath side, see the Haridwar to Sonprayag distance as well.

Dehradun and Jolly Grant Airport to Hemkund Sahib

Dehradun is about 290–330 km from Govindghat depending on the starting point, and Jolly Grant Airport sits at the lower end of that range. Pilgrims landing at Dehradun can book a cab straight from the airport. Our page on Dehradun to Char Dham taxi explains the options.

Hemkund Sahib Distance Map: Stage-by-Stage Road Route to Govindghat

If you are looking for a Hemkund Sahib distance map, the simplest way to picture it is as one long river-valley road. From Rishikesh, NH 7 follows the Ganga and then the Alaknanda river upstream, passing through the Prayags (river confluences) until it reaches Joshimath and Govindghat. The leg distances below are approximate and add up to the 266–280 km range quoted for Rishikesh.

  1. Rishikesh to Devprayag (~74 km). The road leaves the Ganga plains and climbs through Shivpuri and Byasi. Devprayag is where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet to form the Ganga, and it marks the point where the mountain road truly begins. Expect curves and heavy yatra traffic.
  2. Devprayag to Srinagar, Garhwal (~34 km). This stretch follows the Alaknanda through a wider valley. Srinagar is a major town with fuel, food and hotels, so it is a popular breakfast or overnight halt.
  3. Srinagar to Rudraprayag (~33 km). Rudraprayag is the confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, and the road to Kedarnath splits off here. Hemkund-bound traffic continues straight on NH 7.
  4. Rudraprayag to Karnaprayag (~31 km). The valley narrows and the road climbs steadily. Karnaprayag is the confluence of the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers and a convenient tea stop.
  5. Karnaprayag to Nandaprayag (~21 km). A short, scenic leg to the Alaknanda–Nandakini confluence. This part of the highway is landslide-prone in the monsoon, so allow extra time.
  6. Nandaprayag to Chamoli (~10 km). The road enters the Chamoli district. Gopeshwar and Chamoli have shops, medical help and dhabas for a longer break.
  7. Chamoli to Joshimath (~48 km). The climb gets steeper and the air cooler. Joshimath is the winter seat of the Badrinath deity and the gateway to Auli. It is also the last big town with ATMs, supplies and hotels before Govindghat.
  8. Joshimath to Govindghat (~20 km). The final stretch passes Vishnuprayag, where the Alaknanda meets the Dhauliganga, and ends at the Govindghat gurudwara and parking area. Here the Hemkund Sahib distance on foot begins.

The Char Dham highway network connects these towns with Kedarnath and Badrinath, so our Chardham Yatra route map is a helpful companion to this section.

Hemkund Sahib Distance by Road, by Bus, by Car, by Train and by Air

There is no single way to cover the Hemkund Sahib distance, and the best option depends on your group, budget and comfort level. Here is how the main options compare.

Hemkund Sahib distance by road and by car

Driving gives the most control, whether you hire a cab or take your own vehicle. A taxi with a local driver is usually the better choice, since the NH 7 road is narrow in places and prone to landslides in the monsoon. If you drive yourself, start at first light, avoid night driving in the hills, and keep fuel above half a tank. Parking at Govindghat is limited in peak season. Our team can arrange a taxi that drops you at Govindghat and picks you up after the yatra, with terms on request.

Hemkund Sahib distance by bus

Regular buses operate from Rishikesh toward Govindghat, but they leave very early, often before dawn, and seats fill fast in season. Another approach is to take a bus to Joshimath or Srinagar and continue by shared or private taxi. Bus travel works for solo budget travellers; for families and older pilgrims, a taxi is safer and more comfortable.

Hemkund Sahib distance by train

Uttarakhand's hill highways have no railway beyond Rishikesh, so by train means reaching Haridwar Junction or the Rishikesh area, then continuing by road. Haridwar has the best train connections from Delhi and the rest of India, and Rishikesh is the nearest railhead for this route at roughly 266–280 km from Govindghat. After you step off the train, a pre-booked taxi saves time at the station. Our page on Haridwar taxi service covers pickup arrangements.

Hemkund Sahib distance by air

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun. Published figures to Govindghat range from about 270 to 290 km, so allow a long road transfer after landing. Flying helps if you are travelling from far away, but it does not remove the road journey.

Hemkund Sahib Distance Difficulty: How Hard Is the Trek, and How Many Steps?

Many first-timers worry about the Hemkund Sahib distance, but the real challenge is altitude and steepness. The first 13 km is moderate, with a gradual uphill path. The last 6 km is a sustained climb to roughly 4,300 m, where oxygen is noticeably thinner. Reputable guides rate the trek as moderate to challenging, and it is not recommended for anyone with heart, lung or severe knee problems without medical advice.

How difficult is Hemkund Sahib?

Healthy adults who walk regularly generally manage it with rest breaks. Children and seniors do it too, often with ponies, palkis or a helicopter for the first stretch. The pace matters more than speed. Walk slowly, drink water often and do not rush the last climb. Weather can turn cold and wet quickly, even in summer, so carry rain gear and warm layers. If you feel dizzy, breathless or develop a persistent headache, rest or descend. Medical camps operate along the route in season.

How many stairs are in Hemkund Sahib?

There is no official step count. Pilgrim accounts describe roughly 1,000 to 1,100 stone steps on the final stretch leading up to the gurudwara, in addition to the paved mule track below. Treat this as an estimate. Take the steps slowly, in short bursts, and use the handrails.

What to carry

Pack a rain jacket, thermal layers, a cap, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, a small first-aid kit, personal medicines, a water bottle and comfortable trekking shoes with good grip. Carry a photo ID and your yatra registration, and keep a small amount of cash, since ATMs are unreliable beyond Joshimath. Travel light, because heavy bags make the climb much harder. Porters can carry luggage for a fee.

Hemkund Sahib Distance by Helicopter, Overnight Stay and Registration

Helicopter service to Ghangaria

Helicopter shuttles operate between Govindghat and Ghangaria during the season, cutting the 13 km walk to a flight of about five minutes. The service stops at Ghangaria, and the 6 km climb to Hemkund Sahib is still on foot, by pony or by palki. A round-trip fare of about ₹10,080 per person (including GST) was notified for the Pawan Hans service, and tickets are booked online through the IRCTC HeliYatra website. Fares, operators and schedules can change, and flights depend on weather, so confirm the current rate on the official portal. Keep a backup plan in case flights are cancelled.

Staying overnight

You cannot stay overnight at Hemkund Sahib itself. Pilgrims stay at Ghangaria, where a gurudwara, lodges and hotels offer simple rooms, or at Govindghat, which has more options and parking. In peak season Ghangaria rooms fill early, so reserve ahead. Langar (free community meals) is available at the gurudwaras at Govindghat, Ghangaria and Hemkund Sahib.

Registration

Registration is mandatory for the Hemkund Sahib yatra and is handled through the Uttarakhand pilgrimage registration system, which also covers the Char Dham yatra. Reports from 2025 mention Aadhaar-based eKYC for registration, and helicopter tickets also require it. Rules can change each season, so register on the official portal before you travel and carry a printout or screenshot. Also read our guide to the places to see during a Char Dham tour if you plan to add other shrines.

Is there a ropeway to Hemkund Sahib?

A ropeway between Govindghat and Ghangaria has been discussed for years, and there have been proposals for a section toward the shrine as well. Do not plan your trip around it. Treat it as unconfirmed until you see an official announcement, and check the latest status locally.

Best Month and Days Required Based on the Hemkund Sahib Distance

Best month to visit Hemkund Sahib

The gurudwara is open only in the warmer months and is closed under snow for roughly half the year. It usually opens in late May and closes in early to mid October, though sources reported different dates for 2026, so confirm with the Shri Hemkund Sahib Management Trust or the registration portal. June brings the first trekkers, but patches of snow can remain on the upper path. July and August are monsoon months, with rain, slippery trails and landslide risk on NH 7. September and early October are widely seen as the best window, with clearer skies and stable weather, though nights are cold.

How many days are required for Hemkund Sahib?

Because of the Hemkund Sahib distance, a realistic visit needs at least three days from Govindghat and four to six days from Delhi or Punjab once the long drive is counted. A comfortable plan looks like this:

  1. Day 1: Drive from Rishikesh or Haridwar to Joshimath or Govindghat. Register, rest and keep the evening light.
  2. Day 2: Trek or fly from Govindghat to Ghangaria. Walk about 13 km, check in and acclimatise.
  3. Day 3: Early start for Hemkund Sahib (about 6 km each way). Pray, have langar and descend to Ghangaria by afternoon.
  4. Day 4: Walk down to Govindghat in about 3–4 hours and meet your taxi for the return drive, or continue to Badrinath.

Add a day if you want to see the Valley of Flowers from Ghangaria, and another day for Badrinath. For a combined route, our Kedarnath Badrinath tour package is worth a look, and our guide to Joshimath explains this useful halt town.

Hemkund Sahib Distance Planning Tips for Pilgrims from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana

Most visitors come from the plains, so the Hemkund Sahib distance feels very long on the first day. A little planning removes most of the stress. These tips come from the questions pilgrims ask us most often.

Split the long drive into two days

Driving from Delhi or Ludhiana straight to Govindghat in one push is tiring and risky, especially on hill roads after dark. A better plan is to reach Rishikesh or Srinagar (Garhwal) on day one, rest well, and cover the remaining distance the next morning. If you want to keep the trip flexible, ask your driver for a sleep halt at Joshimath, which is only about 20 km from Govindghat.

Start early and watch the weather

Hill roads are quieter and safer in the morning, and afternoon showers are common in the mountains during monsoon months. Check the forecast for Joshimath and Ghangaria before you start walking. If heavy rain is expected, delay the trek by a day rather than risk slippery trails or blocked roads. Helicopter flights are also paused in poor visibility, so keep a spare day in your schedule.

Keep luggage light and documents ready

Leave heavy bags in your taxi or at a hotel in Govindghat and carry only essentials up to Ghangaria. Keep your ID, registration details and any medical papers in a waterproof pouch. Senior pilgrims should carry a printed list of regular medicines and emergency contacts.

Combine Hemkund Sahib with nearby places

Since you are already close to Badrinath, Auli and the Valley of Flowers, many families add these to their plan. The Valley of Flowers trail starts from Ghangaria and is usually open from around June, subject to weather and park rules. Badrinath and Mana village are a short drive from Govindghat. A well-planned itinerary lets you see several places without repeating the long highway journey.
